Game Notes: Sky 95, Shock 70 (Four-game WINNING STREAK!)

My, oh, my…this team just keeps getting better! Todays victim = Tulsa Shock.

First of all, the Sky’s 4-game winning streak is the longest streak in franchise history! Let’s keep it going!

Overall, the Sky were in control of this game throughout. Tulsa got within 5 or so a few times, but never really posed a real threat. Let’s start at the beginning…

My pregame meal at Gino’s East was delicious. They’re a corporate partner of the Chicago Sky or something so I figured I’d try it out. The Sky give out $5 Gino’s East coupons after games so, of course, I used one of those. Nice place. I definitely recommend it as a great place for a pregame or post-game meal. It’s only about 3 miles from Allstate Arena and its really easy to get to. And, of course, anyone that is a friend of the Sky is a friend of mine 🙂

Lot’s of Girl Scouts were in attendance for the Forever Green Festival. I also saw several Detroit Shock fans that probably road-tripped it out here from the Motor City. Tulsa Shock forward and Chicago native, Amanda Thompson, also had a nice cheering section.

Anyway, enough about food other random stuff. Let’s talk basketball. Once again, the Sky looked cohesive and fluid on offense. I’ve been watching this team for 5 seasons now and today it hit me…THIS is what great team chemistry looks like! Offensively and defensively, this team was on point.

Everything tonight began and ended with Sylvia Fowles. 32pts. 13rbs. 4blks. Wow. She, once again, put on another absolutely fabulous performance. All the great things that I said about her last game still stands. This game, she managed to add a few more wrinkles to her game. First of all, she was MUCH more aggressive on the boards than she was last game. Also, she was also knocking down 8-15 ft jumpers with ease from all over the court. According to the box score, she was credited with 4 blocked shots. The actual number was probably closer to 6 or 8. The pregame “Forever Green Festival” was nothing compared to the in-game block party thrown by Big Syl! She was also doing crazy offensive moves around the bucket. Her footwork, control and execution are all impeccable. Wow. Just wow.

It was also a big night for Shameka Christon. She started to heat up last game, but tonight, she was on fire! She started the game drilling threes from all over the court. Watch out league, Christon is starting to find her Chi-town groove!

TYoung broke this game open for the Sky. At the start of the 4th quarter, the Sky were up 7pts. Yes, that’s a nice lead, but Tulsa was clearly still within striking distance. TYoung opened the 4th with 7 straight points. This put the Sky up 14. They never looked back and it was smooth sailing from there.

Our guards (Perkins, ET, Prince and Canty) did their jobs and did it well. Solid game from all four of them. They ran the offense, dropped dimes, hit open shots and got into the passing lanes for steals. None of them dominated offensively, but when you have Big Syl and Christon going off, the guards just have to keep feeding them and hit some shots to keep the defense honest. This is exactly what they did. Personally, I think our guard rotation is darn near perfect!

Our bigs (Kraayeveld, Bass, Irvin and Olajuwon) put in solid minutes. Kraayeveld did a little bit of everything, as usual. Mistie always plays strong in her minutes and it was good to see Abi get some playing time.

The only thing I want to say about the Shock is that…their road jerseys are absolute FIYAH! Luv ’em!

Another fun game. Another fun win.

We’ve won 4-in-a-row.

We’re .500.

Oh, it’s good to be a Sky fan!

“We were still learning each other; we have new faces,” said Fowles of the team’s poor start. “We just had to get on the same page and see what was going to click. It was a little uneasy going in the first four games. But we knew deep down inside that eventually we would come together and play as a team.”

”This is my first year that I’m 100 percent healthy,” she [Fowles] said. ”The coaches look for me to lead on the floor, and I felt like I wasn’t doing a good job on the rebounding part. So I came out tonight intending to do a better job rebounding. Once I did that, everything else fell into perspective.”

“Tonight was the most fun I’ve ever had (WNBA),” Fowles said. “Things just happened to bounce my way.”

This was probably the best game I’ve ever seen Big Syl play. Pure dominance.
