Maya Moore signs with Brand Jordan!

Ok, so this has absolutely nothing to do with the Sky, but, oh well, bear with me for a moment, Sky fans, ok? ok!

This morning the news that Maya Moore signed with Brand Jordan spread like wildfire across twitter. I was NOT ecstatcic. I was NOT surprised. When I read the news I just breathed a sign of relief and was like FINALLY!!! I mean, seriously, what took them so long?

I’ve always loved Jumpman and Brand Jordan in principle. I mean, I grew up as a Michael Jordan FANATIC. But as the years passed, it baffled me as to why Brand Jordan never signed any female ballers. I mean, tons of talented WNBA players have come thru over the years that would fit nicely into the Jordan Brand. And yet, Jordan passed on them all. To me, it seemed like a sign of disrespect from Jordan and his brand. It’s not like Brand Jordan doesn’t make clothing, shoes and accessories for women. They do and they’ve been doing it for years.

Contrary to what others have been saying, Maya is not the first female athlete to be signed to Jordan, just the first female baller. There’s some track and field or something female that has been on Jordan for years. But, I love it how people just make things up though and pass it off as fact 😀

Also, I guess I kinda saw this coming because around draft time didn’t Dwayne Wade tweet something about Maya wearing Jumpman shoes in her photo shoot — he also linked to the picture as proof. Although I can’t find that tweet now for the life of me, I remember it and that gave me the first indication that something was going down with Maya and and Brand Jordan (*EDIT* it was Chris Paul on April 12th — Tweet 1Tweet 2Tweet 3) .

Anyway, I’m not the biggest Maya Moore fan (…I was until (a) the Sky got the #3, not #1 pick in the 2011 draft and (b) Liz Cambage showed up in town on draft day and KILLED IT making her my favorite new player/rookie. Moore was kinda bland in comparison) but this signing is very significant to me. I’ve always loved all of the Brand Jordan athletes — D Wade, Melo, Chris Paul, Ray Allen, MJ — but have never worn it due to what I perceived as blatant disrespect of the female baller. Now I can go get me some Jumpman gear!

“As a student of the game, it is a dream come true to align myself with a brand that has a rich history in sports,” said Maya Moore. “Like most kids, I grew up idolizing Michael Jordan and continue to work relentlessly to reach his iconic status on the court. I’m truly motivated to take my career to the next level as a member of Team Jordan.”

“I am thrilled to welcome Maya Moore into the Jordan Brand,” said Michael Jordan in a statement. “Not only has Maya proven to be a prolific winner on the court, but her hunger and determination to make an impact off the court makes her a valuable addition to the Jordan family. We look forward to working with Maya as she carries her success to the next level.”

Ok, congrats Maya! Way to go, Jumpman!
