Movin’ on up! …to the ‘Burbs

Last year the Sky began their pilgrimage to the suburbs. They moved their home arena from the UIC Pavillion in Chicago to Allstate Arena in Rosemont. However, in 2010, the team continued to live and practice downtown. This year, they’ve completed the move to the suburbs by moving their practice facility to the Sachs Recreation Center in Deerfield. Bye, bye, Attack Athletics. The team offices have also moved from downtown Chicago to Rosemont and the team apartments are also in the ‘burbs.

The Sky announced this move back in mid-April. So why am I bringing this up now and dedicating an entire post to the topic? Well, because I’m super excited for this move! I really like the fact that they’ve moved out of the city for a couple reasons.

For purely selfish purposes, I like this move because I live in the ‘burbs…not far from Deerfield. I don’t know which suburb exactly the players are living in, but if they live anywhere near their practice facility, there’s a good chance I could run into Big Syl at Wal-Mart or Epiphanny Prince at the mall or something. Yeah, I’ve been jealous for years of all you city folk that brag about how you ran into the players at Jewel or just while wandering the city. That can happen to me now! LoL 😀

I think the move is also a good one because, as the articles and video below state, the Deerfield practice facility is more accomodating to the team and they have more flexibility as to when they can use the facilities. That’s good, of course.

Also, Sachs is the former practice facility of the Chicago Bulls…during the MJ championship years. The Bulls still currently practice in Deerfield (at the Berto Center), so if Deerfield is good enough for the Bulls, its good enough for the Sky.

Lastly, hopefully everything is cheaper in the suburbs. I think I remember reading something earlier in the year stating that when the Sky moved their administrative offices to the ‘burbs, they saved a lot of money. Hopefully that also applies to the player apartments, the practice facility and everything else. Lake County in general is cheaper that Cook County so that alone should help cut costs.

Couple articles and a video about the move…
