Article: “Miami’s Sylvia Fowles becoming one of WNBA’s best”

Interesting and informative article about Big Syl from the Miami Herald

* A R T I C L E Miami’s Sylvia Fowles becoming one of WNBA’s best

Arrittio Fowles, Sylvia’s mother, reared five children — three boys, two girls — in Little Haiti and the Victory Home Housing Projects. Sylvia was theyoungest. Her brothers pushed her to play sports and pushed her around while playing sports, but Sylvia held her own by age 14 when she sprouted five inches and had outgrown everyone. Sylvia was mostly content to read books, and Arrittio thought Sylvia would become a lawyer one day, not a basketball player.

As a single mother, Arrittio knew the only way she could cultivate a happy, healthy family was to let her kids know they could confide in her. No matter what, good or bad, Arrittio would never turn her kids down. She taught them core values, too. Humility was most important.

“Being humble is keeping you from worrying about things and things not going your way,” Arrittio said. “When she was growing up, Syl had a real bad temper. The article talks about Big Syl’s growth as a basketball player from a high schooler in Miami to a collegiate athlete in Louisiana to pro player in Chicago/Russia. Coach Chatman contributes many quotes to the article as she has coached Big Syl throughout her career in college, overseas and now in the WNBA.

The the thing that surprised me the most in this article is the fact that Big Syl is currently leading the league in scoring with 20.4 ppg. For real?!? I didn’t know that. Like, seriously, I had no idea! To be honest, normally I don’t even think of Big Syl as a major offensive threat. I guess she is. Thing is, she scores points but she’s not a scorer, per se. Does that make any sense? Maybe I just take Big Syl and her skills for granted. I dunno.

Anyway, read the article. It’s good.
